Gear for Novice Day

The Race car and engine

You will need a working Quarter Midget car for Novice Day. It is highly recommended to look for a used, working quarter midget car

  • Chassis (aka "Roller"): Look for a used, working Quarter Midget car that meets QMA specifications.
  • Engine: All Novice classes must use a Honda 120 engine (NOT Animal, Honda 160 or World Formula)
  • Restrictor Plates: You can purchase Restrictor plates from the WQMA Tech Director on the first day of Novice Training.
    • Junior Novice (Ages 5-8): Red restrictor plate.
    • Advanced Novice (Ages 9-17): Blue restrictor plate
  • Safety Features:
    • Kill Switches: Two functional ignition kill switches are mandatory for Novices: one inside the cockpit and an additional one mounted on top of the roll cage.
    • Throttle Stop: A mechanism to prevent the throttle (gas) from being pressed all the way. For the very first training session, we ask that you set the throttle stop so the pedal moves less than 1/8 of an inch. This keeps speeds very low while the driver learns the brakes and steering

Safety Equipment

All equipment must be in good condition and meet these specific 2026 safety ratings:

  • Helmet: Full-face, professional type rated SFI 24.1/2020 or SA2020 (or newer). Note: For 2026 season onwards SA2015 are not allowed
  • Driving Suit: A one or two-piece suit with a minimum SFI 3.2A/1 rating.
  • Gloves: Two-layer Nomex (or equivalent) with an SFI 3.3/5 rating.
  • Neck Collar: Mandatory Nomex (or equivalent) with an SFI 3.3 tag.
  • Arm Restraints: Mandatory; they must be fastened to the forearms and adjusted to keep hands inside the cage.
  • Safety Belts: Five-point web-type safety belt (1-3/4" SFI 16.1 or SFI 16.2 for drivers under 100 lbs). Must not be expired.
  • Shoes: Completely covered feet with flat-bottom shoes (no Crocs or wheels).

Logistics

  • Pit Cart: A cart which will be used to move the Quarter Midget car to the track, and to work on the car.
    • Most pit carts require 2 adults to load and unload the car. However there are one-man pit carts as well.
  • Hauling: You will need a trailer capable of transporting the car and gear to the track.
    • Choose one that has a ramp, and at least 8 ft in length (ideally 10ft or more).
    • You might need to also get a few jacks to ensure the trailer is stable when unhooked from your truck.
    • A pick-up truck does work for hauling the car, but is usually more work.
    • Truck / SUV for Hauling: 3000LB towing capacity or more is recommended.

Prepare the car

Mount the engine

If the car doesn't already have an engine, you will need to find a Honda GX 120 engine and mount it.

Install the Novice Switch

While most cars would have a cabin switch, for Novice Training an additional switch is required on the top of the car. This switch is typically installed on the rear left side on the top  of the car, with a small piece of PVC tubing to make it easy to turn it off and on.

Remember: The car must turn on (i.e. the switch must be in "off" state) when the switch is facing forward, and the car must turn off when the switch is facing backward.

Check if the car starts

Ensure that the car is working.

(Don't worry if you can't before Novice Training: The novice trainer and other club members can help)

Get safety equipment

Ensure you have all the safety equipment, and ensure that all gear fits on the racer correctly.
