NOVICE TRAINING

The Washington Quarter Midget Association (WQMA) Novice Training Program is a fun, informative learning process designed to introduce your family to the sport of Quarter Midget racing.

Before a driver can compete, they must complete our Novice Training. This program focuses on safety, basic car handling, and understanding the rules of the track. It is not about speed—it is about building confidence and control.

Who Can Join

  • Training: Children may begin training and practice at 4 years, 6 months of age.
  • Racing: Drivers must be 5 years old to compete in a race.
  • Maximum Age: The program is open to drivers up to age 17.

The Gear

You will need your own car and safety equipment for training. Please see the Novice Checklist for more information.

The Training Process

Training is usually conducted in March, and lasts ~8 sessions. Sessions begin at 9am and typically run to 5pm . Training sessions include both classroom-style instructions and plenty of on-track driving.

During training, the drivers will learn

  • Basics of handling the car
  • Flags and racing procedures
  • Racing techniques

The handlers will learn

  • Safety procedures
  • Track procedures
  • Maintaining and Tuning the car
  • Roles and responsibilities on race day

Please reach out to the Novice Trainer for more information.
